Colophon

Books traditionally end with a note on how they were set. This is the one for this site.

The text is set in Source Serif 4, designed by Frank Grießhammer for Adobe after the types of the eighteenth-century French punchcutter Pierre-Simon Fournier. Its optical sizes let the same family serve both the large headings and the reading text. Labels, tables and buttons are set in Schibsted Grotesk, drawn by Bakken & Bæck for the Norwegian newspaper group Schibsted. Both faces are published under the SIL Open Font License and are served from this site rather than a third party.

The red is a rubric, after the red ink scribes used for initials and headings. It is kept for section marks, drop caps and links. The paper colour is warm on purpose: dark text on a slightly toned ground is easier on the eye over a long read.

The pages are plain HTML and CSS, hosted on Cloudflare Pages, with no analytics, advertising trackers or cookies. The only script on the site is the small code finder on the Locke index page. The letter is sent through beehiiv, and the notebooks are printed and shipped by Amazon.
